‘’ For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord’’. (Roms. 14:7-8 NIV)
Paulina, whose mortal remains lies before us this morning, was born six decades and two years ago on 11th April, 1959 at Maabang in the Brong Region, to Mr. A. A. Obuobi and Madam Rebecca Adobea (both of blessed memory). She was the third girl in the family often with seven strong boys. As the third girl, she was affectionately called Ama Mansah in her early childhood days being a Saturday born.
Paulina started her elementary education at Presbyterian Primary School when her father moved to Ntortroso in the Ahafo Ano North Municipality. Due to the nature of her father's job as a Cocoa Purchasing Clerk, she shuffled between schools which affected her primary education. The family finally settled at Hwidiem where she continued her primary education at the Methodist Primary School. Upon reaching Middle School, her elder brother, Mr. Ebenezer Asiedu, who had then completed Wesley College and had been posted to Akim Banso, took her along to stay with him.
She excelled in her academics and was very skillful in netball during her Middle School days. This endeared her to the hearts of her teachers, students, playmates and even her opponents. Paulina sat for the then Middle School Leaving Certificate Examination (MSLC) in 1975 and came out with Distinction. Her Common Entrance Examination was no exception, she gained admission to Boapemsem Secondary School at Dunkwa on Offin.
As a growing child, she had passion for nursing and had read about Florence Nightingale (Pioneer of Modern Nursing) as well as a keen interest intakingcare of the sick and injured in Society. Just after school, Paulina started her career by working as a health attendant in a Maternity Home at Offinso in the Ashanti Region. She later gained admission to Agogo Nursing Training College and graduated after three years of nursing training. After completion, she was stationed to work at the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital for five years and later came to work at the then Centre for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine (CSRPM) in 1988 now Centre for Plant Medicine Research(CPMR) at Mampong Akwapim in the Eastern Region. While at post, in order to better her lots, she gained admission to study for two years between 28thOctober, 1999 and 9th November, 2001 at the Midwifery Training School in Koforidua. Upon completion, she came back to work at the same place till her retirement.
Paulina’s love for the Lord was impeccable. She was a staunch Christian and avowed member of the Presbyterian Church since childhood. She worshipped with the Mount Horeb Prayer Centre for some time where she met her late husband, Mr. Joseph Adu, a teacher at Benkum Secondary School and got married in 1994. She joined Victory Presbyterian Church at Abotakyi where she exercised her faith till death laid its icy hands on her. It is no gainsaying that Paulina was a lady par excellence, calm, quiet, resourceful, respectful, caring and generous from which all her siblings benefited.
Paulina started having health challenges while in active service. She retired from CPMR in April 2019. Her health continued to deteriorate and was taken to many hospitals. Several attempts were made to put her back on her feet, but on the evening of May 16th, 2021, while praying with her, we realized she was weak and was rushed to Tetteh Quarshie Memorial Hospital where she was unfortunately pronounced dead. Death is cruel, death reared its ugly head in the family and snatched away our beloved sister, mother, friend, aunty and lady Paulina. She is survived by her three children, Mina, Bernard and Paul and two grand children; Becky and Ella. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Even though her body returns to the earth, we rejoice in the fact that she is now with her Maker. May her soul rest in Perfect Peace till we meet again at Jesus’ feet.
